How to convert ODT to Word
- Drop the .odt file.

What happens to your file
The document is opened by LibreOffice on Fylane’s servers and saved as DOCX with its text, headings, lists, tables and pictures intact; layout that the target format cannot express is simplified rather than invented. The file is deleted on schedule.
Before you convert anything, it is worth knowing that you may not need to. Microsoft Word has opened OpenDocument text files directly since Word 2007, and every version since handles .odt from File › Open like any other document. Most people who search for a converter could have double-clicked the file. We would rather tell you that than take the conversion.
Converting is still the right move in three cases: the person receiving it is on a phone or a web viewer that only knows .docx, a system is rejecting the upload by file extension, or you want the .docx to be the copy of record so nobody has to think about it again.
What travels cleanly: text, headings, bold and italic, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, images, footnotes, headers, footers and page numbers. What tends to shift: exact page breaks in a heavily laid-out document, and fonts your reader does not have installed — both are formats disagreeing about typesetting, not the conversion losing your work.
Questions
Can Word open an ODT file without converting it?
Yes. Word has supported OpenDocument text since Word 2007 — open it with File › Open and it will read the file. Convert when you need the recipient, or their system, to see a .docx specifically.
What is an ODT file?
OpenDocument Text, the standard format LibreOffice, OpenOffice and Google Docs exports use. It is an open ISO standard rather than one company’s format, which is why it turns up whenever someone writes a document outside Microsoft Office.
Why does my document look slightly different in Word?
Almost always fonts and page breaks. LibreOffice and Word measure line spacing and hyphenation a little differently, so a paragraph can end a line earlier and push the rest down. Nothing is lost; it is typeset again by a different typesetter.
Will my footnotes, headers and tables survive?
Yes — footnotes, headers, footers, page numbers, tables and images all map directly to DOCX, because both formats have the same underlying idea of them.
How do I go the other way, Word to LibreOffice?
LibreOffice opens .docx natively, so usually you do not need to do anything. If you want an actual .odt file, the Word to ODT page makes one.
Are my files kept?
