TAR.GZ to ZIP

The .tar.gz from a server or a download page, as a ZIP Windows opens itself.

More free conversions, where you upload. The Fylane extension does the same work inside any upload form, on its own free share every day.Add to Chrome

How to convert TAR.GZ to ZIP

  1. Drop the file.
  2. Nothing to choose.
  3. Press Convert and download.

What happens to your file

7-Zip unpacks the archive on Fylane’s servers into a scratch folder — a thousand files and 64 MB unpacked at most — and every file is written into a ZIP under its own path, so folders come through as folders. The ZIP opens on every Mac, Windows PC and phone without extra software. Deleted on schedule.

File permissions and symbolic links, which a tarball carries and a ZIP does not, are left behind; the files and folders come through.

Questions

How do I open a .tar.gz file on Windows?

Windows 11 can extract .tar.gz from File Explorer, and Windows 10 cannot without a tool such as 7-Zip. Converting it to a ZIP here sidesteps the question entirely — every version of Windows, macOS and both phone platforms open a ZIP with nothing installed.

What is a tarball, and why two extensions?

Tar bundles many files into one without compressing; gzip compresses one file without bundling. Unix does the two jobs with two tools, so you get file.tar squeezed into file.tar.gz. A ZIP does both at once, which is why it carries one extension.

What about a .gz that is not a tarball?

A single gzipped file such as report.csv.gz comes through as a ZIP holding that one file, uncompressed and ready to open.

Do my folders stay as folders?

Yes. Every file is written into the ZIP under its own path, so the directory tree arrives intact rather than flattened into one heap.

What gets lost in the conversion?

File permissions and symbolic links. A tarball records them because Unix needs them; a ZIP has no place to put them. If you are moving a source tree that must stay executable, keep the tarball and extract it on the machine that needs it.

Is there a size limit?

The archive is unpacked into a scratch folder capped at a thousand files and 64 MB unpacked, which covers almost everything people download from a release page. Anything larger is better extracted locally.

Do it once, not on every form

Fixing a file here means downloading it and going back to the form. The Fylane extension does this work inside the form instead, on the file you already have.

And it keeps the result. The next application that asks for a résumé, a cover letter and a photo fills all three from one tap, each one refitted to what that site accepts.

Your files stay in the browser, encrypted, on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to keep them and nothing is sent anywhere to fill a form.

Filmed from the extension: three upload fields on a job application, filled from one tap.

Add to Chrome — freeWhat it does

Do this in code

curl -X POST https://api.fylane.dev/v1/jobs \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FYLANE_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "file_id": "<file id>",
    "operation": "archive.convert",
    "options": {
      "to": "zip"
    }
  }'

The same operation, archive.convert — Any archive 7-Zip reads — 7z, RAR, tar, gzip, zip — rewritten as a ZIP or, by `to`, a 7z or tar.gz, names and paths kept; a thousand files and 64 MB unpacked at most. Upload first with the quickstart; every option is on the operations page. 500 free credits a month, then $5 per thousand.
