The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC states the rules for a visa photograph, and these are its words: “Digital photographs must be no smaller than 354 (wide) × 472 (high) pixels and no larger than 420 (wide) × 560 (high) pixels; the photograph pasted to the form is 33 mm wide by 48 mm high.” — the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Photographs are compressed with JPEG; the file is generally between 40K and 120K bytes.” — the same specification. China is the most precisely specified of any country we publish: pixels, millimetres, colour depth, the distance between the eyes, and how far the head may turn.
The file-size range is written as “generally” 40K to 120K rather than as a hard limit. This page stays inside it anyway.
The specification also asks that the eyes be more than 60 pixels apart and that the head turn no more than 20 degrees and tilt no more than 25.
The crop and the encode happen in your browser. A photograph of your face, attached to an application, is exactly the kind of file that should not travel to a stranger’s server, and here it does not.
What we cannot check for you: that the photograph is recent, in colour, evenly lit, and taken against white or near-white, with no border. Those are yours. What size photo does a China visa need?
Digital photographs must be no smaller than 354 (wide) × 472 (high) pixels and no larger than 420 (wide) × 560 (high) pixels; the photograph pasted to the form is 33 mm wide by 48 mm high. This page writes 390 × 520 pixels, inside those bounds.
What background does it need?
White or near-white, with no border. A plain wall in even daylight is the easiest way to get one — stand a good arm’s length in front of it so your own shadow falls away.
Is my photograph uploaded anywhere?
No. A JPG, PNG or WebP is cropped and encoded by your own browser; the page works with the network unplugged. Only a format the browser cannot decode, such as HEIC from an iPhone, takes the cloud path, and the page says so before it does.
Why does the file have to be at least 40 KB?
The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC sets a floor as well as a ceiling, to stop people uploading a thumbnail. This page reaches it by keeping quality high rather than padding the file, and tells you if a photograph is too plain to get there.
Can I print this one instead?
